After 1965 the United States saw a fourth wave of immigration. With the first wave beginning in 1609-1775 where the quests for adventure, flight from religious persecution and hopes for brighter economic futures saw great interest of immigrants from Europe. The second immigration wave in 1820-1870 after the American Revolution and wars in Europe saw migrants entering through New York City. The third immigration wave between 1881-1920, saw American interests in skilled labourers with the development of the railroad. The Immigration and Naturalisation Act of 1965 established a new immigrant policy based on recruiting immigrant families and attracting further skilled labour to the United States. Within 1965 alone over 18 million legal immigrants entered the United States three times the number over 30 years. This saw a change in the democratic arrangement of the American population and provided great strength for the civil rights movement. Coming from various countries such as Asia, Africa and Latin America saw such groups fleeing from war-torn countries particularly including Vietnam and Cambodia. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s millions of people also fled poverty or the hardships of the communist regimes in Cuba and Eastern Europe with immigrants from Korea, China, India, Pakistan and Africa. The highest number of immigrants reaching 4.3 million who came to the United States was from Mexico and 1.4 million from the Philippines. Further, The Hart-Cellar Act of 1965 also a by-product of the civil rights revolution, saw preferences of immigrants based on already family relationships, job skills allowing particularly those with occupations deemed critical by the United States department of Labour. Between the years 1980 and 1990 illegal immigration was a constant source of political debate particularly for Chinese immigrants. |
